The Core Problem Recommendation Systems Solve

Item based filtering is commonly used in large scale platforms because the number of items tends to change less frequently than the number of users.


Matrix Factorization

Large recommendation systems often use matrix factorization to improve prediction accuracy.

Instead of directly storing the full user item interaction matrix, matrix factorization decomposes it into lower dimensional representations.

Each user and item is represented as a vector in a latent feature space. These vectors capture hidden factors such as taste, genre preference, or style.

Deep Learning Based Recommendation Systems

Modern recommendation systems often incorporate deep learning models to capture complex patterns in user behavior.

Instead of relying only on user item matrices, these systems incorporate many additional signals, including:

  • device type
  • location or time of day

Neural networks learn relationships between these signals and generate personalized recommendations.

Large scale systems often use a two stage pipeline:

Challenges in Recommendation Systems
